How To Prevent And Treat Your Headaches
There are several common causes of tension headache (also known as muscle-contraction headache). They include stress, poor posture while reading or working, clenching of the teeth and poor sleeping and eating habits.
Consider what may be causing your headaches so you can take one or more of the following steps to avoid the problem:
- DIET. Eat well-balanced meals at regular times. Avoid fad diets.
- POSTURE. Slouching or looking down to read for long periods of time can cause headaches. Try to maintain good posture while reading or working.
- REST. Establish regular sleeping hours. Lack of sleep or oversleeping can cause headaches.
- RELAXATION TECHNIQUES. When you feel that stress is causing the muscles of your head and neck to tighten, try some of these techniques:
Stop what you're doing and relax the muscles of the face, neck and shoulders for at least five minutes.
Breathe in and out very slowly and quietly for one or two minutes at a time.
Sit or lie down in a quiet room with low lights for 15 minutes.
