What would New York do without the droves of would-be actors, models, dancers, and Broadway stars that clean its office buildings and apartments, walk its dogs, and staff its restaurants and hotels? Gilbert is one of them. He came to New York from Allentown, PA, and doesn't let the fact that he was salutatorian of his high school class and won early admission to Penn -- which he refused -- get in the way of his wielding a mean vacuum cleaner. It's all in the service of his art, after all. Still, it's hard to be "up" for a commercial audition at 8 a.m. when you've been mopping Madison Avenue men's rooms all night.
