Headache control: Strategies For relief
[Rule]

If you've ever had a tension headache, you are one of the more than 45 million Americans estimated to have recurrent headaches each year. The ADVIL® FREE BOOKLET "Headache Control: Strategies for Relief" explains what causes headaches and offers suggestions that can help.

Tension headaches, which account for 90% of all headaches, can result when the head, neck or facial muscles contract but do not relax. The resulting pain feels like a squeezing, aching pressure at the temples, across the upper forehead, in the face or in the back of the neck.

Recognizing what triggers your headaches is the first step in reducing or preventing pain. The most common factors are physical, psychological and environmental.

Common physical triggers include lack of sleep, hunger and eye strain.

Environmental triggers consist of allergies or sensitivity to substances in our environment that can cause muscle contraction or vascular headaches. Known allergens and sensitizers run the gamut from nicotine in tobacco to everyday foods (including chocolate, citrus fruit and cinnamon) and food additives.

When the cause of headache is psychological, our emotions may play a role. Reactions such as anger and psychological states like anxiety are commonly blamed.

Although it's important to know what to do once you have a headache, preventive measures including relaxation, exercise and deep breathing are key in avoiding them in the first place.
